Five Methods You Can Use Today To Keep Your Xbox 360 Cool

By Marc Sandford

In order to get a jump on the competition, the Xbox 360 was rushed to completion far too rapidly. The legacy of this is that over 30 percent of these machines have a red ring of death breakdown. The Xbox 360 is a fragile device due to poor design and manufacture.

Its cooling system is inadequate and barely keeps up with the heat output of it's circuitry. If the cooling system fails to work properly, the heat interacts with it's design flaws which brings about the red ring of death. Not allowing your Xbox to overheat is imperative if you wish to avoid the ring of death.

This article presents different methods of preventing your Xbox 360 from overheating.

1.) Although no one is going to deliberately block the cooling vents, there are several ways in which you may do this unknowingly. These include placing the Xbox on surfaces such as beds, sofas, rugs or pillows.

2.) Be careful to place the Xbox in an environment that is well ventilated. This means that the Xbox should not be placed in cabinets, bookcases, racks, or any other confined spaces. It certainly doesn't make any sense to exercise great care in keeping the cooling vents open while placing the machine in a confined space where air can't reach it. Oversights like this are commonplace because most people tend to place things in a way that saves space.

3.) The Xbox can be better ventilated by tipping it on it's side so that it gets greater exposure to the open air. It may be helpful to use a small external fan to cool your console.

4.) Keep the Xbox away from any sources of heat such as heaters, very warm electronics, stoves, radiators and furnaces. In addition to these obvious sources, be careful not to allow direct sunlight to reach it.

5.) While keeping the Xbox cool is vital, it is also important to make sure that the power adapter or power brick is getting proper ventilation. Most of us including myself, would naturally set the power brick on the floor. But if you place it on a shaggy carpet, this can interfere with the currents of air flow needed for cooling. The power brick is best placed up off the floor onto a hard level surface.

The tips given above are intended to be prevention measures that should be taken when your Xbox is brand new. However if your Xbox has been shut down for the first time by overheating, it wouldn't hurt to try them. Hopefully this first time heat build up shut down the Xbox before any real damage could be done. - 16003
